Maidens Bridge is a category A single-arched bridge dating back to the he late 15thc. It is described as an outstanding early and largely complete medieval hump-backed bridge presumably built to connect the monastic estate to Dalkeith. The project was completed in two phases, the first consisting of traditional masonry repairs and consolidation. The second phase of works included consolidation of loose masonry, pointing to hungry joints, drilling and fixing rib stones to underside of arch, clearing vegetation and raking out of soft mortar, re-bedding of loose masonry and the insertion of stainless-steel rods and resin into the ribs middle of the bridge. The nature of the work was such that it is impractical to pre-specify areas requiring repair and consolidation and therefore work had to be specified on the basis of insitu probing and site instruction. The project also required working over water and at height on a moveable and floating pontoon.
