The challenge
The war memorial and civic square in Prestonpans had deteriorating stonework, outdated features and a neglected shelter that was often misused. The lower area, on the coast-to-coast John Muir Way, could only be reached by steps, so wheelchair users could not use the route.
Phase 1: the upper square
- Removing the shelter
- Extensive stonework repairs
- Removing damaging cement pointing and repointing the walls in suitable materials
- A new coping stone
- Relaying the whole square
Phase 2: access to the seafront
A new ramp, finished in stone to match the existing materials, now links the upper square with the lower area, which was repaved.
The result
The work was part of a wider investment in the civic space, making it more welcoming and accessible for residents and visitors.
